Guilt by Association

I'm going to post a snippet from a blog that's significantly bigger than this one in terms of influence. Tell me what sort of site you think it is.

Barack, at least while he was living in Indonesia, was raised as a muslim. But he left Islam behind. He was at best an agnostic during his teenage and young adult years. It was only after Harvard that he joined the church of Reverend Wright. But Barack did not join a Christian Church. He joined a church founded on the principle of black liberation. A theology that is the anti-thesis of mainstream Christianity. He was not taught, “in Christ there is no east or west, in Him no north or south.” To the contrary, he was taught and believed that there is a north/south split–a division between the white haves and the black have nots.
Hmmm--poor sentence structure in at least one place, a couple of demonstrable inaccuracies, sounds like a ringer for a right-wing nutjob site, right?

Nope, it's No Quarter, an ostensibly Democratic blog I've written about before, and it's clear that they've lost their ever-loving minds.

Let's dismiss the inaccuracies first. Forget whether or not Obama was raised as a Muslim--he wasn't, but it's irrelevant. It's obvious that SusanUnPC thinks it isn't, which puts her in the same category as the Freepi. She uses the word "Muslim" the way Klansmen use the N-Word.

The next one is the idea that Black Liberation Theology is the antithesis of mainstream Christianity. Here's a short piece that puts that bit to rest. Professor Dwight Hopkins set it up this way:
"Jesus says my mission is to eradicate poverty and to bring about freedom and liberation for the oppressed," Hopkins says. "And most Christian pastors in America skip over that part of the book."
That's pretty mainstream, and given that Black Liberation Theology is taught in most divinity schools, I'd say it's far from the antithesis of mainstream Christianity.

But more importantly, SusanUnPC is making an even greater mistake. The whole crux of her post is that because the head of the New Black Panther party said something vaguely threatening, Barack Obama is somehow a secret Muslim bent on destroying western civilization. Or something. This is how bad it's gotten over there.

The problem is that guilt by association just doesn't work. You can no more judge Obama by the words of Malik Shabazz than you can judge Hillary Clinton by the words of Norm Ball, Mayor of Tunkhannock:
In a letter to the editor published in a local paper, Tunkhannock Borough Mayor Norm Ball explained his support of Hillary Clinton this way: "Barack Hussein Obama and all of his talk will do nothing for our country. There is so much that people don't know about his upbringing in the Muslim world. His stepfather was a radical Muslim and the ranting of his minister against the white America, you can't convince me that some of that didn't rub off on him.

"No, I want a president that will salute our flag, and put their hand on the Bible when they take the oath of office."
Anyone who claimed that Hillary Clinton was a racist based on that quote alone would be derided as a fool, and rightly so. You can't control who supports you when you're a politician. Obama has already been forced to distance himself from supporters--that's what the whole Wright thing was about, remember? But SusanUnPC hasn't quite figured that out. I wonder if she ever will.
