The closet snags another one and the Random Ten
There's yet another story in the paper about someone being busted for soliciting sex in a mens room--this time it's an Episcopal priest in Boca Raton. Despite what some might think, I don't get any joy out of these stories. They're tragedies, every one of them, whether they involve thrill seekers who are at peace with who they are or people denying themselves and living deep in the closet. I'll admit to a tinge of schadenfreude when it comes to people like Larry Craig or Bob Allen who have made it their life's goal to demonize gay people, but it doesn't lessen the tragedy of the closet any.
I won't pass any judgment on Rev. Penland right now, simply because there's no indication that he's been a hypocrite yet. Now, if it comes out that he's been a gay-basher or something else, all bets are off, but at the moment, he seems to be just another guy who was living straight and was afraid, for whatever reason, to come out, and that's the real tragedy here--that our society is still so anti-gay that people willingly trap themselves in the closet, and only come out when they inevitably self-destruct.
Here's the Random Ten. Put your computer's music player on random and post the next ten songs. Put down everything, even if it's Supertramp. Especially if it's Supertramp. Here we go.
