Earlier today, Alex Sink, the lone Democrat to hold statewide office outside of our current Democratic Senator Bill Nelson, said she wouldn't challenge Mel Martinez for his seat in 2010, preferring instead to run for her own seat again. I doubt this is what she had in mind.
U.S. Sen. Mel Martinez of Florida, who has struggled to boost his approval ratings because of close ties to President George W. Bush, announced Tuesday he will not seek a second term in 2010.That just made the 2010 race a lot more interesting. Will Crist run for the seat? Will Jeb! make a reappearance? Will one of the Miami 3 try to step up in class, or one of the Reps from the north? Or the current Lt. Governor, Jeff Kottkamp?
And what will this mean for the Democratic side? Some House members who might have shied away from a statewide race against an incumbent might see this an open seat as a better option now. Expect a more lively primary season, that's for sure.
