I Love Legitimate Thee-ay-ter
David Cronenberg is collaborating with composer Howard Shore and conductor Placido Domingo to turn his 1986 horror classic The Fly (not to be confused with Kurt Neumann's 1958 goofy shlockfest The Fly) into an opera. You can find more information about the LA Opera Production here.
Obviously, a lot of stuff is still unknown-- how does one perform the matter transmitter special effects onstage? Can the producers create a realistic maggot-birthing effect? How does one sing through a mouth that's been mutated into a weird sugar/vomit dispensing tube thing? But still, the one thing we do know is that this is going to be the greatest thing to ever happen in the history of opera. Finally, someone's found a practical use for such a stupid and boring artform.
