I've Got Your Free Speech Zone
In anticipation of the coming Republican debate on Thursday, FAU has sent out a helpful email with information about parking issues, watch parties, and oh, yes, the "free speech zone."
Free Speech Zone
The soccer field area, just west of the Glades Ave./NW 10th Ave. entrance to the Boca Raton campus, has been designated as the debate day Free Speech Zone. Parking is available directly in front of the area (accessible from Broward Ave.)
One need not be familiar with FAU's campus to know the soccer field is BFE, but that's not the point. If they designated the area just in front of the debate location the "free speech zone" that would be indistinguishably awful.
The entire United States is a "free speech zone" after all.
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.Because federal law takes precedence over local law, can't the establishers of "free speech zones," be they universities or political parties, get dragged before the supreme court and made to stop? Can't the congress make a positive law that assures the freedom of speech, or the freedom from made up "zones" used to concentrate the "unpleasantries" of democracy to where the shiny and rich won't have to smell them? (First it's a soccer field, soon it's Iraq...)
I know that these "zones" have become a part of life under the bu$h regime, and I hope that in the future, "free speech zone" will be a phrase customarily pronounced with the same disgust as "smallpox infected blankets," and "Japanese Internment Camps." In the meantime, I wonder if the students of FAU are sucker enough to fall for this and actually go to the concentration camp(us) they've been assigned -- or whether they will walk free and speak free, anywhere and anyhow they wish, on our public campus, knowing that this entire country, their country, is a Free Speech Zone.
