The Land of Jackie Gleason and Jake LaMotta
Our local PBS affiliate is airing a program called "The Florida Dream" right now, as I type. It's more interesting than you think it's going to be, mostly because they have so much footage from the 1950s and the 1960s-- orange juice commercials, shots of Jackie Gleason playing golf, old fimstrips about the Everglades. Kinda rad. But the best part was when a narrator from a 1950s-era film strip about Florida boasted that "Nearly 50,000 people visit Florida every year!"
Can you imagine how much nicer the driving was back then?
For those curious, in the year 2004, Florida was visited by 76.8 million visitors. Thanks, Disney!
