Is this guy really a Republican?
Charlie Crist is making it tough on Florida Democrats these days. He's doing stuff we really, really like.
As part of Crist's orders, the DEP will develop rules requiring electric companies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to no greater than their 2000 level by 2017 and no greater than their 1990 level by 2025. By 2050, power companies should then reduce emissions levels to 20 percent of what they were in 1990.
"I am confident that with solar and wind and nuclear, we will have the opportunity to retool how Florida produces energy and utilizes that energy in a way that can be clean and can be effective and can be promising for our future," Crist said.
The Public Service Commission will be directed to make rules this year that require power companies to produce at least 20 percent of their electricity from renewable sources like solar and wind.
Now certainly, the more environmentally conscious among us would rather that those reductions were greater and the deadlines were sooner, but compared to the denial that there was a problem at all that existed under Jeb!'s reign, this is an incredible leap forward in terms of governmental environmentalism here in Florida.
There's more goodness in the article. Go check it out. If this keeps up, Crist may find himself with a greater challenge from within his own party when it comes to re-election than from the opposition.
