Don't kid yourself, Ms. Sheehan
I was a big supporter of Cindy Sheehan when she started her crusade. I even sent her group money when twenty bucks meant a lot more to me than it does now (and it still means a good deal). I wrote comments in support of her both here and on many other websites and defended her against right-wing slander more than once.
But she's dreaming if she thinks she can take down Pelosi in San Francisco.
Sheehan said she will run against the San Francisco Democrat in 2008 as an independent if Pelosi does not seek by July 23 to impeach Bush. That’s when Sheehan and her supporters are to arrive in Washington, D.C., after a 13-day caravan and walking tour starting next week from the group’s war protest site near Bush’s Crawford ranch.
I think Pelosi has done a remarkable job holding together a caucus as disparate as the House Democrats, and she's gotten some truly progressive legislation passed, which has either died in the Senate or been vetoed by King George the Lesser. She didn't get to be the first female Speaker of the House by flinching in the face of controversy.
I'd like to think that Sheehan is doing this in order to raise public support for impeachment hearings. Part of me hopes she's successful, at least as far as Cheney is concerned, and it's possible that impeachment hearings on one or both of the current executives will actually occur in the next two years. But if she thinks that Pelosi is going to fold simply because of the threat Sheehan poses, she's going to be surprised.
