Fleet Week, a film recommendation and the Random Ten
There's nothing quite like the sensation of being awoken by the sound of fighter jets rocketing overhead just blocks from your apartment. It's a little nerve-wracking at first, coming awake to the noise and then remembering, in a fog, why those planes are so much closer and faster than the ones that you see heading toward cruising altitude from the commercial airport about 15 miles away. We'll get to see and hear the fighter planes for the next handful of days as they perform along the beach.
You know you're really on break from classes when you stay up till 4 a.m. watching movies you've wanted to see for months. Last night, it was "The Prestige," starring Michael Caine, Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman and Scarlet Johansson. It has a captivating story and terrific performances from all the actors, and David Bowie as Nikola Tesla, a man who has one of the more fascinating stories in American life in his own right. Watch it. It's a Christopher Nolan film, so you'll have to pay close attention.
